Manage Exam Stress
Is Exam Anxiety holding you back?
Exams can be a major source of stress for students, often triggering anxiety, lack of focus, and even underperformance. Exam stress is the emotional, physiological, and behavioural response to the pressure of performing well. While some stress can be motivating, excessive stress can lead to:
- Anxiety, irritability, or low mood
- Difficulty concentrating and staying focussed
- Struggle to get a sound sleep
- Physical symptoms like headaches or stomach aches
- Negative self-talk and fear of failure
- Worry about the future

Teenagers and Exam Stress
Research shows that 96% of students feel anxious about exams, with many reporting that stress negatively impacts their performance and mental health (Childline, 2023). Let’s break down the key factors contributing to this stress:
Academic Pressures
- High Stakes: GCSEs and A-levels are seen as gateways to future opportunities, creating immense pressure to perform.
- Volume of Material: The vast amounts of content leads to overwhelm.
- Fear of Failure: 82% of teachers believe exams impact mental health, with failure being a major concern (National Education Union).
- Peer Competition: 64% of students feel pressured to outperform peers, fostering unhealthy comparisons (University of Bath, 2022).
- Parental Expectations: 59% of students report pressure from parents to achieve high grades (NSPCC).
- Self-Worth: 70% of students tie their value to academic performance, increasing anxiety (Journal of Adolescence, 2021).
- Future Uncertainty: Transitioning to adulthood brings fears about university, careers, and independence.
