A-Levels, Exam Stress, and How Hypnosis Can Help

Exam StressAgoraphobia is an anxiety disorder characterised by a fear of situations where escape might be difficult

A-Level Stress: How to Survive (and Thrive) Without Losing Your Mind

You’re probably surrounded by highlighters, empty crisp packets, and a textbook you’ve been staring at for hours but haven’t actually read. Your brain is a whirlwind of 'What if I fail? What if I forget everything? What if I’m not good enough?' And you're probably one more past paper away from a full-blown meltdown.

First off, let me say this: You’re not overreacting. A-Levels are a big deal, and it’s completely normal to feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders. But here’s the thing—you don’t have to carry it alone.

This isn’t another generic ‘just breathe’ guide. This is your no-nonsense, real-talk toolkit for surviving exam season with your sanity (mostly) intact. Let’s dive in.

Why A-Level Stress Feels Like a Monster Under Your Bed

A-Levels aren’t just exams—they’re a rite of passage, a gateway to your future, and a constant reminder that everyone is watching. No wonder it feels like there’s a monster under your bed, whispering You’re not good enough every night.

Here’s the truth: Everyone feels this way at some point. Even that classmate who seems to have it all together? They’re probably Googling ‘how to stop crying over chemistry’ at 2 a.m. too.

The good news? You don’t have to fight this monster alone. Let’s talk about how to turn the lights on and show it who’s boss.

Your Survival Kit for Exam Season

1. Sleep Is Your Secret Weapon (Yes, Really)
I know what you’re thinking: Sleep? During exam season? Is she serious? Hear me out—pulling an all-nighter might feel like a badge of honor, but it’s basically like trying to run a marathon on an empty tank. Not going to end well.

Your brain works better when it’s rested. Aim for 7-8, even 9 hours of sleep, even if it means sacrificing a bit of revision time. Your grades will thank you, and you might actually remember what you studied.

2. Break It Down: How to Eat an Elephant
Trying to tackle all your revision at once is like trying to eat an elephant in one bite. Spoiler: It doesn’t work. But if you take it one bite at a time, suddenly it feels doable.

Break your revision into small, manageable chunks. Focus on one topic at a time, and give yourself a pat on the back after each one. Progress, not perfection.

3. Breathe Like You Mean It
When stress hits, try this: Breathe in for 5 counts, hold for 7 counts, breathe out for 8 counts. Repeat until you feel your shoulders drop below your ears. (Yes, they’re probably up there right now.)

Pro tip: You can do this during an exam. No one will know you’re secretly zen-ing out while everyone else is sweating over question 3.

4. Move Your Body, Quiet Your Mind

When stress has you glued to your desk, it's crucial to break free and get your body moving. Physical activity is a powerful antidote to stress, and even a brief change of scenery can work wonders for your mental state.

Consider taking a 10-minute walk outside or put on your favourite song and have a dance break right there in your room; let the music lift your mood and shake off the tension. If you're looking for something more calming, try some yoga stretches. These gentle movements can help release built-up stress and can serve as a reset button for your brain, helping you return to your work with renewed focus and energy.

5. Talk It Out: You’re Not in This Alone
Sometimes, the best way to deal with stress is to share it. Talk to a friend, a family member, or even your dog. (They’re great listeners, honestly.)

And if you need someone who gets it, I’m here to help you untangle the stress and find your calm.

When Stress Feels Too Big to Handle Alone

Here’s the truth: Sometimes, stress doesn’t just go away with a few deep breaths or a good night’s sleep. And that’s okay.

If you’re feeling constantly overwhelmed, struggling to focus, or just need someone to help you figure it all out, it might be time to talk to a professional.

That’s where I come in. Together, we can work on strategies to help you feel more in control, less stressed, and ready to tackle your exams with confidence.

You’ve Got This

A-Levels are a marathon, not a sprint. And just like any marathon, you don’t have to run it alone. Take it one step at a time, be kind to yourself, and remember—you’ve got this.
